VIALLI AND MAURO FOUNDATION FOR RESEARCH AND SPORT – ONLUS BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ REPORT FINAL BALANCE AT 31.12.1008

Throughout 2008 the Vialli and Mauro Foundation for Research and Sport ONLUS has carried on its commitment to finance research on ALS.
During the year the Foundation has fulfilled the commitments taken on and has accomplished the following projects:

• within the Objective 3 area, the installation of machinery at the Transplant Centre of the Regina Margherita Hospital in Turin;
• within the Objective 4 area, the award of a biennial scholarship at the Department of Neurosciences in Turin and the purchase of consumption material for Bioplex;
• within the Objective 5 area, the purchase of Aible My Tobii systems, eye-tracking devices used by ALS patients.

Moreover, given its commitment to scientific research on ALS, in 2008 the Vialli and Mauro Foundation was asked to participate, together with the AISLA Association, the Telethon Foundation and the Cariplo Foundation, in the establishment of AriSLA, a research agency that aims at financing the whole scientific research activity on ALS: in 2008 the financial commitment taken on by the Vialli and Mauro Foundation amounted to € 50,000 as endowment capital plus € 50,000 to cover management expenses.

During the year, the Foundation has taken part in numerous events that have allowed the collection of donations from third parties amounting to € 336,049.
In 2008 the founding members have made money donations amounting to € 12,000; they have also made available the premises in Via Piave 10 and have offered their services to the Foundation with the only purpose of promoting the institutional projects. Moreover the founding members have accepted to work for free on the projects by De Agostini and in the film “L’allenatore nel pallone” enabling the collection of donations amounting to € 85,000 that have been added to the donations from third parties.

The Board of Directors’ thanks go to the founding members and to all the supporters.
As explained in detail in the note to the accounts, donations collected have been partially used for the above described institutional projects and partially set aside in specific purpose funds.

Objective nr. 02
The award of a scholarship of € 18,000 has been approved with a one-year respite for the project proposed by Dr. Letizia Mazzini of the University Amedeo Avogadro in Novara on the clinical applications of autologous mesenchymal stem cells in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Objective nr. 04
Accomplishment of the funding for the research project on the analysis of genetic and environmental risks in the development of ALS in Italian professional football players; the project also envisages the award of the last biennial scholarship to the Maugeri Foundation in Pavia (€ 40,000) and the purchase of consumption material for Bioplex (€ 20,000).

Objective nr. 06
Purchase of an electromyograph costing € 50,000.

Moreover the Foundation has committed itself with the University of Turin to provide a ten-year scholarship for a total amount of € 450,000 and to finance for four further years the activity carried out by AriSLA for a total amount of € 400,000.
In 2009 the Foundation is willing to carry on its activity of fund raising through the participation in events organised by the supporters, who offer their expertise to the Foundation, but also through initiatives directly promoted with the objective of reducing the organizational costs for the events and of increasing the resources available for institutional purposes.

Also in the financial year 2009, the Foundation will be included in the list of the bodies eligible to take part in the distribution of the 5 ‰ of taxes paid by tax payers. Our hope is that these tax provisions facilitate the raising of funds to be used for institutional purposes.

Like in the previous year and out of respect for all those that have been supporting and will support the Vialli and Mauro Foundation for Research and Sport – Onlus, we have pursued the objective of providing the highest transparency to our activities, not only in the initiatives we have promoted, but also in the financial and management aspects that can be found in the balance approved by the Board of Directors, which we call upon you to read carefully.
