THE ITALIAN JOB

a journey to the heart of two footballing cultures

In bookstores beginning January 2007

The book:

If there exists a game that is profoundly rooted in both the Italian culture as well as the English culture, it is without a doubt football. Each day, millions of people play football, they watch it, write about it, and discuss it passionately. But in what manner do the actual characteristics of the Italians and the English condition the game in these two nations?  Do the common positions of these two populations – one passionate and elegant, the other eccentric and cold – remain true at the moment in which the ball is kicked? Gianluca Vialli has had an experience in the football world that is perhaps unique.  He lived and played his long professional career between Italy and England both as a player as well as a coach.  With The Italian Job, he ventures into this fascinating business to explain how the two football cultures were born and their evolution in opposite directions to arrive at the point to which this game has become today, including on which laws, even those concealed, that it is ruled, and on which interests, often not completely clear, that are involved.  A journey through two parallel football universes, in which some of the most notable sporting personalities of recent years have participated (from Fabio Capello to Marcello Lippi, from Sir Alex Ferguson to Jose Mourinho, and from Arsene Wenger to Sven Goran Eriksson), in order to offer a prestigious testimony on every aspect of the game, both tactical and technical, and to arrive at a thorough analysis of some sociological themes and even the politics that are involved in the world of football in a book which does not lack some burning revelations.
